Counselling Psychologist
Nicola Williams is an accomplished Chartered Counselling Psychologist, certified Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, and Internal Family Systems therapist, with over thirty years’ experience in healthcare across both the NHS and private sectors.
Nicola’s journey began as a registered nurse specialising in infectious diseases, sexual health, and HIV. She later became a registered midwife, gaining valuable experience in both hospital and community settings. This extensive background allowed Nicola to work closely with individuals facing long-term health conditions, including depression, anxiety, rheumatological symptoms, Functional Neurological Disorder, HIV, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Skilled in addressing a wide range of psychological challenges, Nicola supports clients dealing with unrelenting standards, stress, complex trauma related to adverse childhood events, stigma, medication adherence, and substance use. Her approach is relational, non-judgmental, and compassionate. Nicola employs an integrative style, skilfully tailoring various therapeutic models—such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness—to meet her clients’ unique needs. Nicola also incorporates motivational interviewing concepts and has a keen interest in attachment theory and the drama triangle, a psychological model that highlights dysfunctional dynamics in relationships.
Nicola facilitates reflective practice and develops training for other clinicians focussed on attachment theory, substance use, and core therapeutic skills. Her professional interests include working with vulnerable families, intergenerational family coping styles, perinatal mental health, HIV, long-term health conditions, neurodiversity, and the impact of psychological trauma. She regularly presents at conferences and is passionate about sharing her expertise with fellow clinicians.
