There are a number of therapeutic approaches that can be explored to support clients who are working through a variety of different experiences. Schema Therapy, however, remains my preferred treatment method with the vast majority of my clients and has consistently proven to be a powerful and, in my opinion, superior approach that delves deep into the root causes of my clients’ emotional experiences. It just seems to land differently than other approaches.
How Does Schema Therapy Work?
Understanding Schemas
At the core of Schema Therapy lies the concept of “schemas”. Schemas are deep-rooted, longstanding, dysfunctional patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that develop early in life, typically when our core emotional needs are not met by our parents and caregivers in a ‘good enough’ way. In time, our schemas become our blueprint for navigating life, and become the lens through which we perceive and interpret the world, influencing our relationships, self-perception, and emotional well-being.
